Yesterday I had a rather uncomfortable situation on the job. My boss likes to go out to lunch and do these other social things. They are pure torture for the person with sp. So she plans a birthday lunch for me and this other girl who is also very shy. I was dreading it all week. So we get to the restaurant and it wasn't crowded at all. The service was very slow. We ended up being there for an hour and a half of torture. There were plenty of awkward silences on my end of the table. Then the boss orders birthday cookies for us and they bring them out with candles on them. lol So the the wait staff of the restaurant decides to sing happy birthday to us and we had to stand up and everyone in the restaurant was looking. I thought I would throw up or pass out. I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there and get back to my office. I know the boss means well but I hate those things and I know she was trying to do something nice for us but it wasn't. Oh and we all had to pay for our own lunch too!

Your boss didn't even pay for lunch. What the hell is that all about? i should say, it doesn't shock me, I remember when I worked for a bank, they were throwing a Christmas party and they expected the employees to pay. Can you imagine? Of course, the party was cancelled because no one would go. How dumb is that? Chem

You shouldn't have to pay for that.

yeah the whole thing is silly. next time I will decline and have something else to do.
Thinking of some other places I was at. One place only employees were allowed to go to the xmas dinner. Consultants weren't.
I do have to say that this one place I worked at really knew how to treat. They had all kinds of things like Easter egg hunts with nice prizes, elaborate catered holiday dinners and contractor/consultants were invited.

Haha so your boss took you out for your bday and you had to pay for yourself? Haha, I might try that from now on, i'll buy people presents and expect the money back from them. Glad you made it through ok. It's a shame that such simple basic things have to be such struggles but ho hum. C'est la pee

Yeah that is what happened! lol me and another consultant had birthdays that week so she took the team out. We had to pay for our own.
I'll find a way to skip the torture next time.
