If God gave us free will why does religion try to prevent us from using it. Surely religious societies should have guidance but no laws. I'm bored

If God gave us free will why does religion try to prevent us from using it. Surely religious societies should have guidance but no laws. I'm bored I'm a very devout Catholic myself, but i have thought long and hard over questions like these. My opinion is that a lot of religious laws and doctrines were formulated to control mankind's ability to do evil and harm. Religion attempts to impose control over the beast like impulses imbedded in ourselves. I know a lot of people do not believe in God nowadays, but it seems clear to me that they're is a driving force to the universe. In whatever capacity this force exists and is cognitive, it is this force that i recognize as the source of all creation, wisdom, and love. This force i call God. I think a lot of people choose to disbelieve in a angry, veangeful type God, capable of ruthless action, such as in the Old Testament of the bible. I do not believe in a God of this nature; i believe in a creating God of justice. I think a lot of the old religious ideas and conceptions of God should be discarded and re-thought. For one thing, i think the intelligent design theory of Cambridge UNiversity is an excellent idea and should be explored as a real, and probably idea of God.
